Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy for Infertility:

The term “Hystero” means Uterus and “Scopy” means to see. The technique to examine the uterus is called hysteroscopy.

A hysteroscope is a thin telescopic device, inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix. This tool helps to diagnose and treat problems related to the uterine.

The patient is given anesthesia in Hysteroscopy, and a thin telescope of 1.9 to 2.9 millimeter is inserted for uterus monitoring.

The fertility specialist visualizes the lining of the uterus through hysteroscopy and checks various abnormalities that might affect the embryo implantation or prevent successful pregnancy. Hysteroscopy is a simple day care procedure used for eliminating fibroids present in the uterus. It helps to detect the reasons for repeated miscarriages and evaluates the uterine cavity.

Hysteroscopy is a completely safe procedure to find the roots of the problem in the uterus lining. It brings out detailed information in a 10 to 30 minutes procedure. The technique is recommended for women suffering from infertility due to Endometrium, Polyps or uterine fibroids.

Procedure

The step one of hysteroscopy procedure involves a little stretching of the cervix canal with the help of a series of dilators. After the cervix is dilated, the hysteroscope is inserted into the lower end of the uterus through the cervix to read the uterus.

In most cases, Carbon dioxide gas is introduced into the uterus with the help of the hysteroscope. In few diagnosis, special clear solutions are used instead of CO2.  The gas or solution works to expand the uterine cavity. It clears the blood and sweeps the mucus away. Thus, the physician is able to view the internal structure of the uterus directly. Hysteroscopy is conducted mostly with the application of local anesthesia. It is performed soon after menstruation as it is considered to be the best time to evaluate the uterine cavity without any risk of interrupting a pregnancy. A mock or trial transfer is sometimes done at this time.

Benefits of Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is an important tool used extensively in the study of infertility. It is used to understand the reasons of recurrent miscarriages and abnormal uterine bleeding that otherwise would have been remained unexplained. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is conducted to examine the inside of the uterus or the uterine cavity. It is helpful in diagnosing the abnormities related to the uterine conditions like internal fibroids, scarring, and congenital malformations.

An x-ray performed on the uterus and the fallopian tubes, known as hysterosalpingogram or may be an endometrial biopsy is performed to detect the condition of the uterus lining before or after a diagnostic hysteroscopy.

These sets of hysteroscopy diagnosis help in the followings:

  1. It improves the rates of healthy conception soon after the embryo transfer
  2. It enhances the response of uterine lining
  3. Major improvement is noticed in cases of recurrent pregnancy loss
  4. It being a day care painless procedure is completed in a few hours
  5. There is a shorter hospital stay for surrogates for this diagnosis and detection
